Manchester United secured consecutive pre-season victories as they fought back to defeat Atletico Madrid in Stockholm and lift the Snapdragon Cup. Arnau Ortiz's cross-shot crept in at Tom Heaton's far post inside five minutes but Michael Carrick's team dominated the rest of the first half before scoring twice in the second through Mbeumo to defeat the Spanish side and lift the Snapdragon Cup.
Arnau Ortiz put Atletico in front in the opening five minutes as a fine cross got the better of defenders and keeper Tom Heaton alike, but United were the better side from then on and were rewarded for their perseverance in the second half. Michael Carrick’s side fell behind in the fifth minute when a cross from Arnau Ortiz crept inside Tom Heaton’s left-hand post, and United were unlucky to still be a goal down at half-time after Jan Oblak saved from Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo, who was making his first appearance since playing for Ivory Coast at the World Cup.
Yet Michael Carrick's team proved superior throughout and merited their equaliser when Shea Lacey earned a spot-kick that Bryan Mbeumo duly dispatched. Lacey’s flick bamboozled Jorge Castillo into tripping him up, and Mbeumo sent replacement goalkeeper Salvi Esquivel the wrong way from the spot. The Cameroon forward's first came from the penalty spot after Shea Lacey was tripped. His second came after fine work by Jack Fletcher in winning the ball back on the right.
