Nottingham Forest remain hopeful that Morgan Gibbs-White will be available for Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa, according to the BBC.

The England midfielder's fitness has emerged as a significant concern ahead of what is, by any measure, the most consequential fixture in Forest's recent history. The club have offered no firm confirmation that he will play, but neither have they ruled him out — a position that will offer their supporters some encouragement as the week progresses.

Gibbs-White has been one of Forest's most important players during their rise back through the divisions and into European competition. His ability to carry the ball, link midfield and attack, and contribute directly to goals makes him difficult to replace on a night when Forest will need creativity as well as organisation against a Villa side with genuine European pedigree.

The tie is finely poised heading into the second leg at Villa Park. Forest, a club that won back-to-back European Cups under Brian Clough in 1979 and 1980 but have spent the decades since largely outside the top flight, are now two legs away from a European final — a prospect that would have seemed remote not long ago. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have themselves been rebuilding as a European force and will carry the advantage of playing the second leg at home.

Whether Gibbs-White starts, comes off the bench, or is absent entirely will shape Forest's tactical approach considerably. If he is unavailable, their manager will need to find an alternative means of unlocking a Villa defence that will be well-organised and well-motivated on their own ground. Thursday evening will arrive quickly, and Forest's medical staff will be working to give the player every possible chance of featuring.

Further updates on his condition are expected before the match. For now, the BBC's report of cautious optimism from within the club is the clearest indication of where things stand.
