Larry Berg, part owner of LAFC, was selected as the new commissioner of MLS, the league announced Monday. MLS owners voted Monday, and Berg received the required two-thirds super majority to be approved.
Berg will succeed Don Garber as the head of the 30-year-old league, with a term starting after Garber officially steps down. He will be the third commissioner in MLS history. The league announced Monday that he will transition to the role of chairman after Berg assumes the role, to ensure “a seamless leadership transition as MLS enters one of the most significant periods in its history”. According to the league, "Berg will divest his ownership interest in LAFC through the league's established transition process to ensure he leads the league and its 30 clubs with full impartiality."
Under Berg's ownership, LAFC won the MLS Cup title in 2022, two Supporters' Shields, and a U.S. Open Cup trophy.
League owners already voted last year to flip the calendar to align MLS, and its primary and secondary transfer windows, with the top European leagues.
