Trevoh Chalobah has departed Chelsea to join Serie A side Como in a deal worth an initial £25.7m, with a further £5.1m available through add-ons. The clubs reached a verbal agreement on Monday before the transfer was made official this Sunday, drawing a close to a protracted negotiation process that had at various points stalled.
The move ends an association with Chelsea that stretched back almost two decades. Chalobah first joined the club as an eight-year-old, progressed through the Cobham academy and worked his way into the senior squad, ultimately making 151 appearances across all competitions. In that time he collected five trophies, among them the FA Cup in 2018 and the Conference League in 2025.
The path to Como was not entirely smooth. Negotiations dragged on for several weeks, complicated by Inter's interest — the Nerazzurri eventually walked away from the table when they judged the asking price of €30m plus add-ons too high, leaving the field clear for Como to finalise terms. Chalobah had already agreed personal terms with the Serie A club some weeks before the deal was concluded, and he travelled to Italy on Wednesday for his medical ahead of Sunday's announcement.
He has put pen to paper on a five-year contract running to June 2031. Because Chalobah came through the Chelsea academy, the transfer is classified as pure profit under the Premier League's Squad Cost Ratio financial system, which will increase the club's spending allowance for this season.
Central to Chalobah's decision to make the move was a conversation with Fabregas, who managed Como to a fourth-place finish in Serie A last season and Champions League qualification. The two men share a history at Chelsea, where a younger Chalobah trained alongside the Spaniard.
"The call with Cesc was really good, he showed how much he wanted me," Chalobah told the official Como website. "Knowing Cesc, obviously, he's been at Chelsea, and I trained with him when I was younger. Now obviously to play under him will be amazing. For sure, I'll give it my all. I'm excited for this new journey."
Fabregas was equally forthcoming about the signing, saying that Chalobah gives Como strength, speed and personality in defence, as well as the technical quality to build from the back, and that he is a leader who can raise the level of the team. He added that Chalobah had competed and won at the highest level while remaining hungry to start a new chapter and keep improving.
Chalobah arrives at the Stadio Sinigaglia fresh from representing England at the 2026 World Cup, where he was a late call-up to the squad and helped his country secure the bronze medal. He holds two senior international caps.
During his time away from Chelsea he gained experience on loan at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town, Lorient and Crystal Palace before establishing himself in the first team. Como described their new signing as comfortable in possession, physically imposing, and a player who brings athleticism, versatility, leadership and experience at the highest level.
