Barcola backs Liverpool move but Arsenal plot £100m-plus hijack for PSG winger

Bradley Barcola has given Liverpool the nod on personal terms, yet Arsenal are circling with inside intelligence suggesting the 23-year-old wants to settle in London.

Liverpool have moved into pole position in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola after the Frenchman gave his personal approval to a move to Merseyside. Arsenal, however, are pushing hard to intervene, with a transfer fee that could exceed £100 million yet to be agreed between Liverpool and PSG.

Barcola, 23, emerged as Liverpool's primary attacking target following Mohamed Salah's departure, with new head coach Andoni Iraola pressing for wide reinforcements. The player's agreement on personal terms removed one of the more significant potential complications in what is shaping up as one of the summer's most costly deals, though Liverpool have not yet come close to satisfying PSG's demands on the fee.

PSG's valuation of the winger stands at around £145 million, a figure reported elsewhere as closer to £128 million, with Liverpool said to have entered direct, official negotiations with the French club. PSG hold a strong hand — Barcola still has two years left on his contract — and are under little compulsion to sell.

Arsenal's interest has intensified in the meantime. The Premier League champions, having already brought in Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 million, Greek winger Christos Tzolis and French goalkeeper Illan Meslier, are understood to have made approaches to Barcola's representatives. Leandro Trossard's departure to Besiktas has sharpened Mikel Arteta's need for attacking width, and a separate pursuit of Vinicius Junior ended when the Real Madrid forward signed a new six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Former Arsenal forward Perry Groves, speaking on talkSPORT, made the case that Barcola's best option would be north London rather than Merseyside. "I've got no dog in the fight, but I would say the Gooners because Liverpool are a team that are in transition," Groves said. "Andoni Iraola going in there, imposing his own philosophy, his own style with all the new signings coming in. If you were Barcola and you thought, what out of those two sides have got the most chance of winning the Premier League or Champions League, at the moment you'd say it was Arsenal."

Groves then went further, claiming a source had given him a telling detail about the player's personal preference. "I've got a source that says he [Barcola] wants to live in London," he told talkSPORT. "I can't tell you (who), I can't divulge my sources. I've got a source. I've got a mole. Barcola wants to live in London."

Barcola has made 152 appearances for PSG since arriving from Lyon in 2023, contributing 39 goals and winning two Champions League titles and three Ligue 1 titles. Despite that record, he has had to contend with competition from Ousmane Dembele, Desiree Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for a consistent starting berth.

Liverpool have already added Victor Munoz from Osasuna to their attacking options, but the future of Cody Gakpo remains uncertain. The club are reluctant to sanction his exit unless two forwards are secured as replacements first, with Tottenham Hotspur said to have been told that £70 million could be sufficient to land him. Salah, meanwhile, has completed his own move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

With no fee agreed between Liverpool and PSG, and Arsenal having made contact with Barcola's camp, the destination of one of Europe's most sought-after wide players remains genuinely open.
