Chelsea and Tottenham are both at home in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with the draw pairing the five-time winners against Luton Town and the north London club against Charlton Athletic respectively.

Chelsea, who have not lifted the trophy since 2015, will welcome Jack Wilshere's League One Luton side to Stamford Bridge. It will be Xabi Alonso's first Carabao Cup fixture since his appointment as head coach earlier this summer, and the tie gives him the chance to open his cup account against lower-league opposition.

Luton earned their place in the second round by beating Gillingham Town 3-0 on Saturday. Tottenham's clash with Charlton will be the first competitive encounter between the two clubs since 2011, when Spurs ran out 3-0 winners in the third round of the FA Cup through a 49th-minute opener from Andros Townsend and a quickfire double from Jermain Defoe. Tottenham's most recent Carabao Cup triumph came in 2008, when Jonathan Woodgate's extra-time goal gave them a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

The draw was conducted on Monday evening ahead of the final opening-round tie between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City at Home Park, with the winner of that match set to host Coventry City — led by Frank Lampard — in the second round.

Eleven Premier League sides have entered at this stage, joining the 35 first-round winners. Those clubs competing in European football this season, among them holders Manchester City and Arsenal, will not enter until the third round. The draw remains regionalised for the second round, splitting ties into northern and southern sections to reduce travelling distances for clubs and supporters, but that arrangement ends from the third round onwards.

Among the other notable ties in the southern section, Fulham host AFC Wimbledon at Craven Cottage, Brentford travel to Birmingham City, and Ipswich Town take on Leicester City. West Ham, who beat Portsmouth in the first round, travel to Southampton.

In the northern section, the standout match sees last season's Europa League semi-finalists Nottingham Forest host Leeds United at the City Ground — the only all-Premier League tie of the round. Hull City travel to Stoke City, Newcastle United welcome West Bromwich Albion to St James' Park, and Everton face a trip to Preston North End, where David Moyes began his managerial career and also spent time as a player.

Preston's opening group-stage match against Huddersfield Town was played at Goodison Park while a £1.5 million redevelopment of the Deepdale pitch is under way, though the club have given supporters assurances that the ground will be ready for their first home league fixture on 22 August.

All second-round ties will take place in the week commencing 24 August, with matches going straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes.
