Tottenham have secured Micky van de Ven on a new contract running until 2031, with the club confirming the deal alongside a reaction from head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
The 25-year-old had been weighing up his future at the club before De Zerbi's appointment in March, a move that proved central to his decision to extend his stay. Van de Ven originally joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year agreement taking him to 2029, and the fresh terms add a further two years on top of the deal that was in place.
The Netherlands international has made 96 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and scored ten goals, captaining the side for the final six matches of last season. That season saw Tottenham win the Europa League in 2025 and, the following campaign, narrowly avoid relegation on the final day of 2025-26. Van de Ven has earned 24 caps for the Netherlands and represented his country at this summer's World Cup.
In a teaser video released by the club, Van de Ven — accompanied by members of his family — said: "When something big happens in your life, you tell your family first. So, I want to tell you, I just signed a new contract with Spurs. We've already shared some unbelievable moments here and I'm staying because I want to make so many more. I'm really excited about where we're going and what we can do together."
De Zerbi was equally enthusiastic, saying: "Micky is one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us. He has the qualities, mentality and ambition that we want at Tottenham Hotspur, and I am very happy that he has decided to continue his journey with the Club. We are building something strong here, and players like Micky are an important part of that future. His decision to sign a new contract shows his belief in what we are creating together."
Sporting director Johan Lange also welcomed the renewal, describing Van de Ven's development over the past three years — as both a player and a person — as huge, and labelling him without doubt one of the outstanding defenders in European football. Lange said the Dutchman represents the type of player the club intends to build its future around.
Van de Ven had been linked with a departure last season before becoming a key figure and leader under De Zerbi. His defensive partner Cristian Romero, by contrast, is expected to leave the club, with Atletico Madrid leading the pursuit of his signature ahead of Arsenal and Inter Milan. Tottenham have made clear they have no desire to sell Romero to Arsenal. Romero, 28, still has three years remaining on his current contract.
Spurs have moved to reinforce the position in any case, with Marcos Senesi arriving as a free agent and Van de Ven's international team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke signing from Brighton. The club have spent £237m in total this summer, including a club-record £100m to bring Sandro Tonali from Newcastle.
