That result — Leeds' first away win at Old Trafford since 1981 — rounded off a head-to-head sequence last season in which Daniel Farke's side also drew at Elland Road, giving them the upper hand across both Premier League meetings. Leeds go into Wednesday's game unbeaten in their last three against United across all competitions, and Farke will be looking to make it four straight pre-season victories after his side beat RB Leipzig in their most recent outing.

The venue itself gives the occasion a particular weight. Croke Park, the 82,300-seat arena in north Dublin, is sold out and hosting a football match between two English clubs for the very first time. Association football has not been played there since 2009, when Ireland faced France in a World Cup play-off. Prior to 2007, the ground — home of the Gaelic Athletic Association — had never staged the sport at all. The GAA amended Rule 42 that year to allow football and rugby on a temporary basis while Lansdowne Road was being rebuilt, and the policy was made permanent when Aviva Stadium opened in 2010.
Peter McKenna, Croke Park's stadium and commercial director, reflected on how far attitudes have shifted. "Games like rugby and soccer were seen as being imperialistic or not part of our native culture," he told BBC Sport. "In order to maintain membership, there was the so-called ban. Things change over time, people become more mature and more flexible. So that rule no longer exists, and we have a very strong relationship with the Football Association of Ireland and with the Irish Rugby Football Union."
On the team news front, United boss Michael Carrick faces a potential doubt over Mason Mount, who came off with an injury during the 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain. Carrick confirmed Mount had taken a knock, saying he wanted to be careful given the squad's otherwise clean bill of health. Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Benjamin Sesko and Kobbie Mainoo are also sidelined. On the brighter side, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens have both returned to fitness after minor illness, and Marcus Rashford — absent since a Europa League appearance against Viktoria Plzeň in December 2024 — could be in line for his first minutes of the summer after arriving at the Dublin training camp on Sunday.
Farke must decide how to deploy his attacking options after both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Felix Nmecha scored against Leipzig. James Trafford, who completed a club-record £40 million move from Manchester City on 6 August, could make his debut having missed the Leipzig win two days after signing. Gabriel Gudmundsson is Leeds' only confirmed absentee, though Lucas Perri and Ilia Gruev are carrying knocks.
United's pre-season record reads: a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham, a 5-0 win over Rosenborg, a 2-1 victory against Atletico Madrid and then the draw with PSG. Leeds lost 3-2 to Wrexham before wins over Sunderland, Liverpool and Leipzig. Both clubs open their Premier League campaign on the first Saturday of the new season — United travelling to Hull City, Leeds away to Nottingham Forest.
