Chelsea have confirmed the signing of left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano on a five-year contract, with the fee set at £16.3m plus a further £1.7m in add-ons.
The 28-year-old becomes the ninth addition to the first-team squad this summer. Chelsea first made contact with the Spanish club at the end of June, acting on a request from head coach Xabi Alonso, with negotiations proving protracted. Rayo initially quoted €15m before raising their asking price to €25m, and the two sides eventually settled on a middle ground of €19m. A breakthrough arrived last week, enabling a medical to be booked and the deal finalised.
Alonso was impressed by Chavarria, who helped Rayo Vallecano finish eighth in La Liga and reach the Conference League final last season. The Spaniard made 44 appearances in all competitions during his time there, having spent four years at the club after moving up from Segunda División side Real Zaragoza in 2022. His arrival addresses the gap left by Marc Cucurella, who departed to Real Madrid in a deal worth £51.7m.
Chavarria will contest the left full-back position with Jorrel Hato. Despite being 28, he carries only four seasons of top-flight experience. His signing makes him Chelsea's third defensive arrival of the window, following right-back Marco Palestra and Maxence Lacroix.
"I'm so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success," Chavarria told Chelsea's website.
Elsewhere, the summer has seen Chelsea shatter their transfer record to bring Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge from Aston Villa for £117m. Danny Welbeck, 35, joined from Brighton, while Jordan Henderson, 36, signed after leaving Brentford. Valentin Barco, Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda have also arrived. Among those to have left are Andrey Santos, Trevoh Chalobah and Tyrique George, with Alejandro Garnacho moving to Aston Villa on loan.
Alonso made plain before the club's pre-season tour of Australia and Asia that further business remained on the agenda. "We have to be ready. The market is open for a few weeks. We need to be aware of different positions, different situations, so for sure, we have a plan, an idea, and we need to assess in the right moments," he said.
Chelsea conclude their pre-season schedule against Real Sociedad on Saturday before opening their Premier League campaign with a London derby away at Fulham on 24 August.
