Arsenal have secured a January recall clause as part of the season-long loan that takes Ethan Nwaneri to Borussia Dortmund, giving the Gunners a formal mechanism to pull the teenager back mid-season if they see fit. The deal, completed on transfer deadline day, is a straight loan with no buy option and no obligation to purchase, with the fee understood to be around £4 million.

Dortmund moved quickly for Nwaneri after summer signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a serious knee injury during their opening Bundesliga fixture, creating an immediate gap in their attacking options. The recall clause gives Arsenal the option to bring Nwaneri back when the window reopens in the New Year, should they feel it necessary.

Lars Ricken, Dortmund's managing director for sport, was unambiguous about why the club targeted the Arsenal youngster. "With the loan of Ethan, we have managed to acquire a very talented and technically gifted midfielder," Ricken said. "Due to Giannis Konstantelias' extended absence, it was important for us to strengthen our squad again in the short term. For us, signing Ethan was the best possible sporting solution. We are delighted that we were able to complete this shortly before the end of the transfer window."

Nwaneri made 51 appearances for Arsenal after becoming the Premier League's youngest debutant in 2022, at the age of 15 years and 181 days. He scored 10 goals in an Arsenal shirt before departing, and heads to the Bundesliga having already experienced continental football — he scored twice in 11 appearances during his loan spell at Marseille in the second half of last season.

That prior experience abroad left its mark. The forward said the first time away had pushed him well outside his comfort zone, but felt the transition would be smoother on this occasion. He was also nudged towards Dortmund by a familiar voice — England Under-21 teammate Jobe Bellingham, who is entering his second season at BVB and is a fellow member of the Young Lions squad, made his enthusiasm for the move clear in conversations with Nwaneri.

"I've spoken to Jobe in the last few days," Nwaneri revealed. "He asked: 'What's going on with you?' And I told him that I couldn't really say yet. But we talked a lot. And he kept saying that I should come to BVB. I'm happy that we'll now be playing side by side."

Arsenal had initially sought a loan arrangement within the Premier League, but Dortmund's ability to offer European football proved the decisive factor. Premier League rules prevent loanees from playing against their parent club unless a specific agreement is in place, though that restriction does not apply to loans outside England, meaning Nwaneri is eligible to feature for Dortmund in UEFA competitions. The two clubs meet in the Champions League on 24 November.

Nwaneri could feature for Dortmund as soon as Saturday, when they travel to Hoffenheim. The visit to Sinsheim follows Dortmund's 2-0 opening Bundesliga win over Hamburg and their progression to the DFB Cup second round on deadline day itself.
