Dunfermline Athletic hold a first-leg lead in their Scottish Premiership play-off quarter-final after Chris Kane scored the only goal of a 1-0 victory over Arbroath, according to BBC Sport.

Kane's effort, which BBC Sport have published footage of on their website, was enough to separate the sides and give Dunfermline a narrow advantage to carry into the second leg.

The play-off route is one of Scottish football's more unforgiving passages. Clubs finishing in the lower reaches of the Premiership and the upper positions of the Championship must navigate a series of two-legged ties with promotion or relegation the ultimate prize. A one-goal margin offers little comfort to either side — Dunfermline will know that a single away goal for Arbroath could shift the balance entirely.

Dunfermline, who play their home fixtures at East End Park in Fife, will be familiar with the pressures of the play-off rounds. Kane, as their scorer here, carries evident responsibility in front of goal at this stage of the season, when margins are at their tightest.

Arbroath, for their part, will travel into the second leg knowing that the tie remains open. A clean sheet and a goal of their own would be sufficient to turn the outcome in their favour, and the narrowness of the deficit will give their squad and supporters reason to believe the task is far from impossible.

The second leg will determine which side advances. For now, the advantage, slender as it is, belongs to Dunfermline.
