Manchester United's miserable week deepened on Tuesday when it emerged that teenage prodigy JJ Gabriel had formally asked to leave the club, days after a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City left manager Michael Carrick under growing pressure from supporters and the media.

Gabriel, who turned 15 in October last year, submitted a letter requesting the cancellation of his registration, effectively seeking to become a free agent. The club have been left confused by the move, with officials unable to identify what has driven the decision. United are pushing back, insisting he cannot be deregistered while his contract — which runs until the summer — remains in force, and Premier League rules require the agreement of the club, the player and a parent or carer before any cancellation can take effect.

The timing is particularly striking. Just five days before his request was lodged, Gabriel had scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah. He had also been named the youngest-ever recipient of United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award last season, after finishing the campaign with 26 goals in 29 games, and has twice represented England Under-17s.

United had been on the verge of taking the next step with Gabriel, having planned to include him in the matchday squad for Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie with Brighton — a move that would have made him the club's youngest-ever player, breaking a record set by David Gaskell in 1956. That plan has now been abandoned. He has not trained for two consecutive days, and it is unclear whether he will be available when the Under-21s host Brentford at Leigh Sports Village.

One factor behind the breakdown, it is understood, is Gabriel's restricted involvement during pre-season. He appeared just once in pre-season, coming off the bench against Atletico Madrid, and his relatives are said to be frustrated that he has not yet broken into Carrick's senior side. This dissatisfaction is reported to have been building over several months. Intervention from director of football Jason Wilcox was previously required to prevent Gabriel from departing when he was 14.

Because Gabriel holds an Irish passport through his father Joe O'Cearuill — a former Republic of Ireland international who played for St Patrick's Athletic — he will be eligible to join a club on the continent when he turns 16, which he does on 6 October. Under current rules, English players may not move abroad until they are 18. Should he depart for a club outside England, United would be due only around £300,000 in compensation, a considerably smaller sum than they could command from a domestic transfer.

Chelsea are understood to be leading the pursuit among the English clubs keen to take advantage of the situation, although the Blues are currently serving a nine-month academy transfer ban that began in March, leaving them with three months still to run on the embargo. Arsenal and Manchester City have also been credited with serious interest. On the continent, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have all made contact with Gabriel's representatives. Real Madrid and Barcelona in particular have been tracking his progress for several months.

Gabriel's Instagram account, which had amassed 844,000 followers, was recently wiped of all its posts.

Carrick was asked about Gabriel last month and said the teenager was continuing to develop across different levels. "JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit and is getting experience all the time," Carrick told reporters. "He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and we're just continuing his development."

United remain hopeful that the situation can be resolved before it reaches a point of no return, but Gabriel and his camp are understood to be pushing for a swift departure.
