Manchester United in urgent talks to stop JJ Gabriel walking out of Old Trafford

The 15-year-old wonderkid has formally asked to have his registration cancelled, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and other elite clubs closely monitoring the stand-off.

Manchester United are locked in urgent discussions to persuade JJ Gabriel to reverse his decision to leave the club, after the 15-year-old formally requested the cancellation of his registration with immediate effect. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are personally involved in talks the club hopes will bring matters to a resolution.

The timing was particularly painful. Gabriel had been in line to feature in Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie with Brighton — a match in which he would have become the club's youngest ever player. Having missed training this week, he is now set to play no part.

The exit request followed his omission from the senior squad for last week's Champions League fixture against Azerbaijani side Sabah FK. Gabriel instead appeared in the corresponding Uefa Youth League match, scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 win. His father, Joe O'Cearuill — a former Republic of Ireland international — is said to have been frustrated by the exclusion, and was also unhappy that Gabriel did not feature in the Premier League game against Ipswich Town.

The grievances sit against a backdrop of remarkable progress. Last season Gabriel became the youngest player to represent United's Under-18 side, debuting at 14 and scoring twice against Leeds United. He went on to score 23 goals in the Premier League Under-18 competition and three in the FA Youth Cup, helping United reach the final of both. He was named the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year and won the club's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award — the youngest recipient in that honour's history. This season he has already scored five goals in three appearances across United's development sides.

United are not simply releasing him. Premier League rules require the player, the club and a parent or guardian all to consent before any youth registration can be cancelled; the Premier League itself can intervene if agreement is not reached. Gabriel's current youth contract runs until the end of the season. He turns 16 on 6 October, when he becomes eligible for scholarship terms, though no professional contract is permitted before he reaches 17.

His Irish passport is a crucial detail. Post-Brexit restrictions prevent English players from moving abroad before the age of 18, but those rules do not apply to Irish nationals. Real Madrid are considered among the leading contenders should Gabriel depart, with Barcelona also firmly involved. Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain, Manchester City and Chelsea are among the other clubs keeping close watch. Barcelona had already made efforts to cultivate a relationship with the teenager, who spent part of the summer in Catalonia.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara drew on his own experience when addressing the situation on Sky Sports. "I didn't play for Tottenham till I was 21. I didn't make my debut till I was 21 at Tottenham. Went out on loan a couple of times. So, you have to be careful because you think you're ready at 15," he said.

United Under-21s coach Adam Lawrence offered a different kind of reflection in the wake of the Youth League win over Sabah. "The first thing in my job is not to ruin him," Lawrence said. "When you have a talented player like JJ, you obviously don't want to stifle their freedom and their creativity."

United officials say they do not know the precise reasons behind Gabriel's desire to leave and insist they do not regard the situation as beyond repair. Michael Carrick and Sir Alex Ferguson have both held meetings with the youngster and those around him to outline the pathway available at Old Trafford.
