Arsenal extended their unbeaten Champions League run to 14 consecutive victories with a 3-0 win over Lille at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, all three goals arriving in a seven-minute burst after the hour mark.

The hosts had laboured through the opening 60-odd minutes against a Lille side that defended with discipline and carried a threat on the counter. Ayase Ueda put the ball past David Raya in the 22nd minute only to be ruled marginally offside, and Bruno Guimaraes wasted the best chance of the first half when he diverted Timber's cutback just wide. The Brazilian also appealed for a penalty after a collision with Alexsandro, but referee Felix Zwayer waved his claims away and VAR did not step in.

Jurrien Timber opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark. Noni Madueke picked him out inside the area and Timber applied a deft finish with his right foot after a brilliant first touch freed him from Lille captain Benjamin Andre. It was his first home start since March, his return having been delayed by separate ankle and groin injuries that had cost him approximately 25 games for club and country.

Mikel Arteta then sent on Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz, and the effect was immediate. Guimaraes found Saka in the right-hand channel and the substitute's cross was coolly finished by Eberechi Eze for the second goal — his first of the season — just three minutes after Timber's opener. Saka then combined with Havertz and Odegaard before rolling home a third in the 71st minute, his fourth goal of the season. All three goals had arrived within seven minutes.

"We had moments in the game – in the first half especially – in certain moments we arrived in very dangerous positions with a lot of advantage," Arteta said. "Our technical quality wasn't good enough to deliver moments of real threat, and especially to be able to sustain attacks so well in certain transitions. The moment we made a change in terms of positions at half-time, our technical level increased, and we attacked the spaces where we thought we could hurt them. It was a joy to watch, the three goals were unbelievable, the connections, the timings, the quality they delivered to score. Three different players, and more who participated in those goals, so overall, I'm very, very happy."

Lille manager Davide Ancelotti, who took charge of the club only this summer in just his second senior role, conceded his side could not cope once Arsenal turned the screw. He told UEFA his players gave everything but acknowledged that three goals in five minutes had proved impossible to contain, adding that Arsenal's bench options had allowed them to alter the rhythm of the game entirely.

The evening also carried a sombre note, with Arsenal mourning the death of life president Ken Friar at the age of 92. The players wore black armbands throughout, and Arteta paid tribute to a man he described as someone who had created an identity and a vision for the football club that would leave a lasting legacy.

Former Lille striker Olivier Giroud, now 40, received a standing ovation when he returned to the Emirates for the final dozen minutes. Mikel Merino started for just the second time in all competitions this season, with Arteta having used the Spain midfielder primarily from the bench since his arrival from Real Sociedad.

Arsenal's winning run now stands at 14, leaving them three short of Bayern Munich's record of consecutive victories in the competition's league phase. They face Bayern in Germany a week on Wednesday before returning to Premier League action at Nottingham Forest this Sunday.
