Barcelona and Bayern Munich are both pursuing Anthony Gordon, the Newcastle United winger, in what is shaping up to be one of the more consequential transfer contests of the summer window. Talks between Barcelona and Newcastle are understood to be under way, with the Spanish champions having moved to join the German title holders in pursuing a player who has established himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent wide forwards.

Barcelona's sporting director Deco travelled to London ahead of the FA Cup final and held meetings with a number of potential targets during that trip, among them representatives of Gordon's camp. The visit signals that Barcelona's interest has moved beyond casual inquiry and into something more structured. A figure in the region of £80m has been reported as the likely price of any deal, which would reflect Gordon's standing as a first-choice starter for Newcastle and, in recent seasons, for England.

The emergence of two clubs of this calibre underlines a broader reality about Gordon's trajectory. He arrived at St James' Park from Everton in January 2023 and has developed steadily under Newcastle's management into a player of genuine European pedigree. His combination of direct running, pressing intensity and end product has made him difficult to replace in the system built around him on Tyneside, which is precisely why any sale would represent a significant moment for the club.

For Newcastle, the commercial and structural pressures are real. The club have Champions League ambitions of their own and would be reluctant to weaken a forward line that has been central to their recent progress. Yet a fee approaching £80m, should it materialise, would be difficult to dismiss out of hand, particularly given the broader financial context in which Premier League clubs now operate. How the club's ownership weighs that calculation will be one of the more closely watched decisions of the coming weeks.

Bayern's interest adds a further dimension. The Bundesliga side have a long history of recruiting from the Premier League when they identify a profile they want, and Gordon fits a number of the attributes they tend to prioritise in wide positions. Whether they are prepared to match what Barcelona might offer, financially or in terms of the project, remains to be seen. What is clear is that Gordon's situation is unlikely to resolve itself quietly, and Newcastle will need to decide sooner rather than later how firmly they intend to hold their position.
