Manchester United are in the final stages of securing a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, with the transfer fee understood to be in the region of £38m to £42m. The Brazilian midfielder would become the first arrival of the summer under manager Michael Carrick, and the two clubs are believed to be close to an agreement.

Ederson has established himself as one of the more complete central midfielders in Serie A during his time in Bergamo. Atalanta have built their reputation on developing and trading players of exactly this profile — technically sound, physically robust, capable of functioning in both defensive and creative roles — and the club will command a significant fee for a player who has contributed to their continued presence at the upper end of the Italian top flight.

United's interest is understood to have been competitive. Atlético Madrid were also linked with the player, but the Premier League club appear to have moved decisively enough to see off that interest and position themselves as the clear frontrunners. The speed with which a deal has been reached suggests United identified Ederson early as a priority rather than a fallback option.

For Carrick, adding an experienced international midfielder at the outset of his first summer window sends a clear signal about the direction of the rebuild. United's midfield has been a point of discussion for some time, and a player of Ederson's profile — disciplined positionally, with the technical quality to cope with the demands of Premier League football — addresses a genuine structural need. Whether he arrives as a starter or as competition for an existing player, his presence would raise the quality of options available.

If the deal is concluded as expected, Ederson will arrive at Old Trafford with a point to prove at the highest level of club football outside Italy. The fee alone places a measure of expectation on him, but a player who has thrived in Gian Piero Gasperini's demanding system at Atalanta is unlikely to be unfamiliar with pressure. United's supporters will be watching the remaining stages of this transfer closely.
