Tottenham have confirmed a deal with Manchester United over the sale of academy winger Tynan Thompson. Standard Sport understands that United are set to pay £8million (£4m up front and a further £4m in add-ons) for Thompson, who was named in Spurs’ first-team matchday squad on three occasions last season. However, the Press Association reports that Thompson, 18, started to grow frustrated at a lack of first-team chances at Tottenham, despite being named on the bench three times in the 2025-26 campaign and has completed a transfer to United, subject to registration.

In announcing the signing, a United statement said: "Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young winger Tynan Thompson, subject to registration. The England youth international has joined from Tottenham Hotspur. "The 18-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18s to Under-21s level, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games. His performances earned him opportunities within Spurs’ first-team matchday squads. "Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future."

The England youth international was a hit in the UEFA Youth League, where he scored seven goals in seven games for Tottenham, including a hat-trick in the 9-1 win over Slavia Praha.

Personal family circumstances have also been cited as a reason behind the departure, with a desire expressed by Thompson’s family to relocate to the Manchester area, sources close to Spurs have told PA. A sell-on clause in the region of 15 to 20 per cent and a matching rights condition, which may allow Tottenham to bring Thompson back to the club in the future, has also been included in the deal.

Sources say United have lured Thompson, 18, to Old Trafford on a hefty salary with the promise of promotion to the senior squad. Spurs also released a short statement. "We have reached agreement with Manchester United for the transfer of Tynan Thompson," it said. "The 18-year-old winger progressed through our Academy ranks to feature frequently for our Under-18s and Under-21s in recent seasons, and was named in our first team squad on three occasions in 2025/26.
