The Englishman's last match as a referee was eventual World Cup champions Spain's last-16 1-0 win over Portugal on July 6.
The now former top-flight official announced the news in a post on his LinkedIn account on Tuesday. Taylor, 47, enjoyed a 20-year career spanning 831 matches, with his final game being Spain's 1-0 win over Portugal in the World Cup last 16 on 6 July.
“After 16 unforgettable seasons officiating at the highest level of English and international football, I have decided that the time has come to retire from elite refereeing.
In announcing his retirement, Taylor suggested his decision had been fuelled by the "intense" pressure and "constant" scrutiny he faced in the role. Taylor added: "There will be people who've had their doubts about carrying on. When we take that fear factor of making a mistake and being told you're not very good, and if you're continually told you're not very good, whether that be by people in the media, pundits or even ex-officials who should have a better understanding and be more balanced in that, then yeah people's mental health could potentially suffer."
Over 16 Premier League seasons, Taylor took charge of 432 top-flight matches and officiated every major domestic cup final. His honours include the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, the 2015 League Cup final, the 2015 Community Shield and the 2018 Championship playoff final. During that time, he officiated at two World Cups (2022 and 2026), two European Championships (2020 and 2024) and two Club World Cups (2022 and 2025). Taylor was shortlisted to referee the 2022 World Cup final, but was discounted because of political tensions between England and finalists Argentina.
