Newcastle have made Aladji Bamba their fourth signing of the summer after the 20-year-old midfielder completed a move from Monaco for a fee that could rise to £34m. According to Sky Sports, Sky Sports News understands Newcastle will pay an initial fee of £30m, plus £5.5m in potential add-ons.
Bamba has signed a five-year contract and will wear the No 8 shirt, previously taken by Sandro Tonali before his £100m exit to join Tottenham earlier in the window. Bamba is a 20-year-old France U20 international who plays as a defensive midfielder and was nominated for the 2026 European Golden Boy award last season. He played five times in the Champions League, including both legs of their knockout tie against Paris Saint-Germain, and made 18 appearances in Ligue 1, where he recorded two assists.
A product of Monaco's academy, Bamba made his first-team debut for the Ligue 1 club last year and went on to make 25 appearances, including both legs of Monaco's Champions League knockout phase playoff against Paris St Germain. As a natural No 6, Bamba will be expected to compete with Lewis Miley for the midfield anchor role vacated when Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham for an initial £92.5m.
Newcastle’s transfer policy is to sign players aged 24 or under costing, broadly, between £20m and £40m and possessing high resale potential. The idea is to help ensure a club that have recently negotiated a three-year settlement agreement with Uefa after breaching European spending rules remain on the right side of football’s squad investment regulations.
“Aladji adds a range of qualities to our midfield with huge potential for growth,” said Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager. “His development since breaking through at Monaco has been really impressive and is something we believe we can build on.”
