Jurgen Klopp has returned to management with the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund boss being confirmed as the new German manager.
Klopp emerged as the federation's preferred candidate after Nagelsmann stepped down following Germany's penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32. Germany were knocked out in the last 32 by Paraguay in one of the major shocks of the tournament.
"It is a great honour for me to be here. Over the last few days it has always felt like a movie happening to me," Klopp told a press conference on Friday. "I’ve always known that the job of Germany head coach is big but now it’s really dawning on me what the job is about. If you look at where I’ve come from it was unimaginable that this job was ever for me. Now I think the time is right and I’m grateful to everyone concerned. Ideally, it is a path that we will all go on together."
Klopp also described his appointment to the national team position as 'the highlight of my career'. 'Criticise me if something doesn't work. I'm happy to work on it. It's all about the job. Jurgen Klopp doesn't have a career after the national team. Ideally, this is the highlight of my career.'
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said of the appointment: "Jürgen Klopp, like few others, embodies passion, credibility and the ability to inspire people. He was our first choice for the role. That's why we made every effort to secure his services." DFB president Bernd Neuendorf added: "We've had very intense discussions. He was our ideal solution from the start. "And we at the DFB were unanimous in saying he was the candidate we had to talk to. "Our talks with Jurgen only strengthened our belief that he's the right man at the right time."
