If the manager fails to choose a player within 10 seconds, the team's captain will be selected automatically. Officials will not prevent players from visiting the touchline as an injury is treated but it is hoped the prospect of playing with 10 players for a minute will act as an adequate disincentive.
English football chose this trial as it follows the logic applied to outfield players, who must themselves leave the field for one minute if the physio comes on. When an outfielder is seen by the physio, they must leave the field – unless an opponent has been carded for the challenge that caused the injury. The rule was taken on ahead of the 2023/24 campaign but goalkeepers had been immune and could get treatment on the pitch.
Last season saw plenty of instances in which goalkeepers were seen by a physio on the pitch, allowing team-mates to receive instructions from their managers and breaking up the action.
