Tottenham took on Sydney in their third match of pre-season with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win after a 1-1 draw and here are our Spurs player ratings.
Tottenham beat Sydney FC on penalties to earn their third victory of pre-season after being held to a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes during which Mathys Tel scored a stunning free-kick. Tottenham continued their winning start to pre-season with a penalty shootout victory over Sydney FC at the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday morning.
Tel found the top-right corner with a wonderful strike from 25 yards in the 29th minute in Sydney, but the A-League side equalised after half-time through Takahiro Sekine before Martin Dubravka saved a penalty in the shoot-out, which allowed Dane Scarlett to net the winner. Until the introduction of Andy Robertson down the left, making his first appearance of pre-season following a free transfer from Liverpool, Tottenham created precious little at Allianz Stadium. Their only goal, stunning though it was, came from the boot of Mathys Tel, a fine dipping free-kick sent into the top corner after Manor Solomon was fouled on the edge of the box. Mathys Tel opened the scoring for Spurs with a pinpoint free-kick 29 minutes in, curling the ball into the top right corner of the net.
Tel’s goal was ruled out by a second half strike by Sydney’s Takahiro Sekine, set up thanks to a horror ball into his path from compatriot Kota Takai. Sydney equalised 10 minutes into the second half as Spurs substitute Kota Takai made an interception which turned into a perfect pass for Takahiro Sekine, who ran through and scored.
Andy Robertson made his first Spurs appearance as a second-half substitute, being handed the captain's armband and impressing in a 25-minute cameo by setting up two chances and having a shot saved before tucking away a penalty. The Scot, signed on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool, came on for his debut in his new colours in the second half, and he was a threat down the left as he whipped crosses in to his young team-mates. The Scottish left back was bright and put in a few delightful crosses after taking the captain's armband instantly.
