Andoni Iraola secured consecutive pre-season wins as Liverpool defeated Wrexham 1-0 at New York's legendary Yankee Stadium.
Liverpool continued their winning start to life under Andoni Iraola by beating Wrexham 1-0 in their second pre-season contest ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Stand-in captain Dominik Szoboszlai was forced to play centre-back following the injury to Joe Gomez against the Black Cats. He was still involved in Liverpool's best chance in the first half, picking out Harvey Elliott, who would then set up Josh Abe for a shot kept out by former Reds goalkeeper Danny Ward. Iraola made four changes at the break, one of those being the introduction of Rio Ngumoha. The teenage sensation proved the difference-maker, driving at the heart of the Wrexham defence before his deflected effort looped into the back of the net for the sole goal of the game 15 minutes from time.
The 17-year-old sensation saw his deflected effort loop in off Wrexham defender Lewis Brunt in the 75th minute, an action which proved the difference at the famous Yankee Stadium. A night which saw the Reds launch their new away kit, Ngumoha was brought on as a second-half substitute by Iraola and was deployed at right wing, a position that is currently central to Liverpool’s transfer plans after the departure of Mohamed Salah at the end of last season. Liverpool have been heavily linked with a big-money move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, with widespread reports claiming the club are readying an opening bid.
Kieffer Moore did waste a good chance for Wrexham in the latter stages, fluffing his lines from close range, but Liverpool held on to make it two wins from two in the United States. “On from the end of last season, I just want to play and start as many games as I can,” Ngumoha told Liverpool’s official website. “These games are a really good showcase to show the manager, because it’s a fresh start for everyone. It’s really important and it’s good.”
