Michael Morrison will leave Cambridge United this summer, the club have confirmed, along with James Brophy — a departure that arrives in the same breath as the news the BBC reports was meant to be celebrated: promotion to League One.

Cambridge announced the exits as part of a broader end-of-season assessment of their squad, according to the BBC. Morrison, who has served as club captain, will not be part of the setup as United return to the third tier.

There is an uncomfortable symmetry to the timing. Morrison has been a central figure at the Abbey Stadium, the sort of experienced defender around whom a dressing room organises itself, and his contribution to securing promotion will be difficult to overstate even as the club moves on without him. Brophy's departure adds a further layer of change to what should be a straightforward moment of progress.

Promotion from League Two is no small achievement. The division is congested, physically demanding, and rarely kind to sides that lack experience in tight moments — which makes the captain's role all the more significant over the course of a long season. That Morrison leaves having fulfilled that responsibility says something about how the campaign unfolded, even if the club have chosen not to extend his involvement into what comes next.

For Cambridge, the immediate work now shifts to building a squad capable of competing in League One. Losing two established players before that process is complete leaves genuine gaps to fill, and the club's recruitment will be watched closely. The third tier brings different demands — longer away trips, stronger opposition, attendances and atmospheres that can expose a thin squad quickly. United will be conscious of that.

Morrison, for his part, will attract interest. Captains who deliver promotion tend not to remain available for long, and his experience will be a useful commodity for clubs operating at League One and Championship level. No destination has been reported. Brophy's next move is similarly unconfirmed.

What is clear is that Cambridge begin their League One preparations having already made two significant decisions about the shape of the group that will attempt to consolidate the club's place in the third tier. The summer ahead will define whether promotion proves to be a foundation or merely a moment.
